Cane trash has for a long time been lined along alternate or every interrow after green cane harvest, followed by a pre-emergence herbicide application on every exposed soil surface. With the increase in the cost of production and shortage of labour, these lining practices are no longer justified in the dry non-irrigated areas where cane yields are generally low. Instead, a new technique, trash blanketing, requiring less labour to spread trash evenly over the whole surface, has been found to yield equally or even more under drought conditions due to a better conservation of soil moisture. With the trash blanket, weed control is not only satisfactory but is also more economical and safer to the environment due to the reduction in the amount of herbicides used. Trash blanketing has also given promising results in fields harvested by the recently introduced chopper harvesters; results obtained under burnt cane conditions are also discussed. | |
