The performance of twenty biparental crosses, representative of the MSIRI sugar cane breeding programme, was evaluated at the seedling, the first clonal and the simulated second clonal generations over two contrasting environments. There were highly significant genetical differences between the families for a range of important agronomical, morphological and quality characters, at all selection stages at both sites. For most characters the between full-sib family variation was significantly higher than the within family variation. In addition, additive and dominance genetic variation were highly significant for all traits at the two sites at the seedling stage. Narrow-sense heritability estimates were generally low to moderate for most traits whilst environmental variation was high. These results tend to indicate that family selection can be effective at the preliminary stages of selection. The practical implications of these findings on selection approaches are discussed. | |
