Transport represents a substantial proportion of the costs of cane production. Optimum use of prime movers and trailers is necessary to minimize transport costs. An electronic data acquisition system was used to compare two types of trailers and to monitor the technical parameters influencing the performance f a tractor-trailer working in association with a chopper harvester. The system was trouble free with no difficulties in data collection and storage. However, due to high speeds encountered during haulage operations, regular verification and recalibration of sensors were necessary before the start of therecording process. The Gilibert single axle trailer was found to be more efficient than the Legras double axle. No marked difference was observed betweeen the average working speed with and without payload. The effect of fuel consumption on different road surfaces could not be assessed as it was difficult to maintain the other technical parameters constant. The wheelslip (percentage) was higher than that normally expected in haulage operations. Analysis of engine speeds (rpm) revealed that the tractor frequently operated in the uneconomical zone. The drawbar power required per tonne cane hauled could not be determined as there was no means of measuring coefficient of rolling resistance. | |
