M 2238 is a new high yielding sugar cane variety, released in 2006, for cultivation in the rocky B soils of the superhumid zone of Mauritius. This variety has medium sucrose content and fairly high fibre content. It is suitable for mid-season and late-season harvest. The variety is resistant to yellow spot and leaf scald and slightly susceptible to gumming and rust. In B soils, its sucrose content was higher than that of R 579 at mid-season harvest and equal to that of M 3035/66 at late-season harvest. Consequently, the variety produced higher sugar yields than R 579 by at least 9 per cent. Fibre content exceeded that of R 579 by 20 per cent. The variety has a fairly erect growth habit with a medium number of cane stalks of medium height and diameter. It germinates well and flowers moderately. Together with variety M 1861/89, which was released in 2--5, M 2238/89 can constitute a possible substitute for M 3035/66 which shows signs of decline in ratoons in the superhumid zone. | |
