Drip irrigation has many advantages and can boost crop yields more than can other methods of irrigation. However the initial capital costs could restrict its use in many countries. In Mauritius studies have been undertaken to investigate ways of increasing revenue through drip irrigating sugarcane with an intercrop. The effect of various water regimes on intercropping systems compared with five crops of sugarcane alone are reported. Shading of the cane by a maize intercrop was more important than was water stress. Yield differences due to competition are explained through the effect of the intercrop on sugar yield components and crop development. | |
