In the MSIRI-IH joint research project on drip irrigation in sugar cane, root development was followed using the trench profile technique. Of the three factors examined, dripline placement had the greatest effect on root development. There was a differential root growth towards the areas of higher soil water potential around the driplines placed in the middle of alternate interrows. Higher rates of stalk elongation were observed for row as opposed to interrow dripline placements. Irrigation regime had a marked effect on stalk growth but not on the rate or extent of root development. The uptake of water by roots under the different regimes is also discussed. | |
