Models of the soil water movement and crop response to variable soil moisture conditions require field data for their calibration and verification. These data must be continuous throughout the crop season and not confined to periods so short that it is impossible to establish the influence of the environment on the seasonal pattern of crop growth and development. This paper describes experimental work on the drip irrigation of sugarcane in which soil moisture and crop growth data were collected throughout the crop season. The problems of carrying out an intensive interdisciplinary study of this nature are discussed. | |
