Research is being undertaken on the effect of various factors on yield of drip-irrigated sugar cane. Results for the plant crop are described; they indicate water regime to be the main factor determining cane yield, followed by placement of drip tubes. Other factors, such as flow rate, dripline type, and cane row spacing, had almost no influence on yield. The results are exlplained in relation to root development, soil moisture potential, and water depletion beneath the cane rows as well as leaf water potential and energy capture by the crop. An economic survey of drip and other forms or irrigation is also included in the project. | |
