The liquid excrement of many Homoptera, which often accumulates as honeydew, can be harmful to the insects that produce it. Disposal of excrement to avoid or reduce its harmful effect is therefore important. The methods of disposing of excrement in Coccidae are described. These iinsects have an anal apparatus for propulsion of excrement away from the body. The musculature of the rectum is not involved in this act. Attendance by ants modifies excretory behaviour in Coccidae, much as it does in Aphididae. | |
