The growth patterns and yields of plant cane originating from seed pieces which had been fertilized with a supplementary dose of 120 kg N and 120 kg K2O/ha were studied in 1991 and 1992 in field trials at Union Park and Mon Rocher. The data obtained showed a better germination and initial vigour of the plant cane when the supplementary NK was delayed until one month before the seed pieces were harvested. The initial better growth of the plant cane was however negated in later stages with the result that no increase in cane or sugar yield was observed. Overnight soaking of seed pieces already supplemented with 120 kg N and 120 kg K2O/ha did not further improve the subsequent growth and yield of the plant cane. | |
