The response of five newly released sugar cane varieties to increasing rates of nitrogen (N) fertilizer (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N/ha) were investigated in field trials laid down in the three main ecological zones in Mauritius. Varieties R570 and M3035/66 tended to respond to N rates as high as 150 kg N/ha, whereas varieties M2370/62 and M574/62 showed no response to rates higher than 50 kg N/ha. Variety M657/66 did not respond significantly beyond the 50 kg N/ha rate in sub-humid and superhumid zones but showed a significant response to the highest rate of N in the humid zone. Leaf N threshold values have been established for each variety and variety corrections calculated for application in the foliar diagnosis of nutrient status in Mauritius. | |
