The data obtained from four sections of a sugar estate have been used to discuss the various possible utilisations of the information gathered in the indexing of sugarcane lands (Land Index Project), with the help of data from four sections of a sugar estate. These data refer to micro-environment, yield variation due to cane variety, soil type and climate, to interline and mixed cropping, and to agricultural potential. Results obtained are discussed in relation to agricultural development. It is observed, for example, that sugar production per unit area can be increased by changing some cultural practices, thus allowing land being released for diversification without affecting the total sugar production. A more detailed analysis of data is proposed with a view to finding out the possibility of incerasing the acreage of land available for foodcrops according to the following criteria:- 1) Cultivation of cane interlines after the 2nd ratoon; 2) Effect of differential spacing on yield; 3) Planting of long season instead of short season cane; 4) Postponing replantation; 5) Changing harvest date. | |
