It was reported that Nutsch molasses contained a large number of crystals when using filters equipped with the conventional 150 µm screen. Investigations were carried out at two factories making use of 150 and 35 µm screen apertures to find out whether there would be a significant difference between the Nutsch molasses to warrant the use of the smaller screen aperture. The 35 µm screen was chosen because the smallest aperture used in the centrifugals is 40 µm. The weight of Nutsch molasses collected after one hour was also recorded in order to ascertain if sufficient Nutsch molasses would be available for analysis with each of the different screens. The results indicate that the small mean purity difference of 0.1 unit found with the two screens is not significantly different and an adequate amount of Nutsch molasses is obtained much more rapidly with the 150 µm screen. Since rapidity of analysis is essential and trends rather than absolute values are required for routine boiling house control, the 150 µm is recommended for such control. | |
