Some important cultural operations have greatly improved in Mauritius. These include a better land preparation and reclamation with the use of powerful bulldozers wherever possible; the introduction of minimum tillage, particularly on slopes, to combat erosion; improved irrigation techniques which provide a more proditable use of available w ater; a sophisticated and judicial use of herbicides; the use of amendments of cane rows to allow for more intensive interrow cultivation of food crops; the use of artificial ripeners to increase the sucrose content, particularly when the season starts early in the year; and finally, mechanical cane loading which has increased the efficiency of cane cutters. | |
