After a first attempt in the mid 1970's, mechanical harvesting of sugar cane was introduced once more at the end of the 1980's after agricultural labour shortage. Several types of machines have been tested but chopper harvesters have been found to be better suited for local conditions. This new mode of harvesting has so far not revealed any deliterious effect on cane yield. However, harvesters operating in the rocky soils of Mauritius are subject to damage resulting in cane losses during harvesting. The amount of cane harvested mechanically reached 610 000 tonnes, i.e., 10 per cent of total cane produced in 1998. Of this, 84 per cent were chopped cane. | |
