This case study focuses on the objectives of the germplasm screening programme and on the sources and type of germplasm required. The procedure followed in the screening programme is described. Commercial varieties are imported mainly from Australia, France and the Netherlands, and clones from the International Potato Center. They are tested at 2 sites and in 2 seasons for 4 years. Selection is based on yield, adaptation to climate and planting season and reaction to major diseases and pests. Varieties released by the programme and their important attributes are also given. | |
