Liriomyza huidobrensis Blanchard (Diptera: Agromyzidae) is a small polyphagous insect first observed in Mauritius in AUgust 1992. The larva is the most damaging stage and may cause drastic reductions in yield, if left uncontrolled. To allow a better understanding of the bioecology of the pest and to formulate appropriate control strategies, the effect of different abiotic factors on the life cycle of L. huidobrensis and its parasitism in Mauritius was studied. Preliminary observations indicate that it differs from the existing L. trifolii Burgess in its ecological adaptability, being more prominent in cooler areas. The abiotic factors studied in various localities in different agro-climatic zones include the following: (a) altitude (temperature); (b) rainfall; (c) soil type; (d) relative humidity. Because of its importance in the cultivation of potatoes in Mauritius, varietal effect was also investigated. The biology of the pest and control methods currently being applied and proposed novel techniques are also reviewed. | |
