The quality of Mauritius raws, which at one time enjoyed an excellent reputation amongst refiners, had lately greatly deteriorated. The main measures adopted by the industry to improve the filterability of these raws are reviewed. These measures include, amongst others, the adoption of the enzymatic process of starch removal, the replacement of cold or hot liming by boiling juice liming, the remelting of C-sugar instead of using it as footing for the shipment strikes, the production of less B-massecuite and of smaller crystals, the screening of the r aws after centrifugalling and the adoption of strict quality control on all the raws produced. As a result of these measures, average filterability of Mauritius raws improved considerably in 1966 as compared to the previous crop. Furthjer, in the light of the experience gained in 1966 and of the results obtained after two months crushing in 1967, it is expected that the average filterability for 1967 will be still much better than that registered in 1966. | |
