Greencane trash blanketing was recommended in 1992 in the subhumid areas where a better soil conservation increased cane yields. This new practice requires less labour to spread trash evenly in fields harvested manually and uses less herbicide treatments. Five field trials were laid down in the humid areas, receiving more than 2500 mm of rain annually, to compare trash blanketing to the traditional practice consisting of lining trash on alternate interrows. A treatment consisting of leaving trash in situ was also included. Their effect on cane yhield, soil temperature and weed control was assessed. Cane yield is influenced by the annual rainfall and its distribution; yield was significantly reduced when the annual rainfall exceeded 3500 mm. Soil temperature under the trash was decreased by 1 to 2° C. Weed control was not improved by a trash blanket which decayed quickly resulting in weed infestations. The trials have shown that trash blanketing should not be adopted in the humid zones. | |
