Aulacaspis tegalensis (Zehnt.) (Diaspididae) occurs in the islands of S.E. Asia, the Mascarenes, Madagascar and in East Africa. In Mauritius, and more recently in East Africa, it is an important sugarcane pest. It is essentially a stem-inhabiting insect and infested canes have low brix, sucrose, and purity. Rotting and death of canes may also result. The most practicable control methods are cultural, including hygienic measures to minimize dispersal of the insect and its carry-over from one crop to the next, and the use of resistant varieties. Efforts to improve biological control by parasite and predator introductions are also being made. Insecticidal control is not feasible. | |
