The possibility of selecting superior sugar cane varieties specifically adapted to the extremely dry and wet zones of Mauritius was assessed using four genetic combinations obtained from bi-parental crosses between sugar cane varieties of different adaptation. Forty genotypes from each family were evaluated for cane and sugar yields and their components in plant cane and first ratoon. Significant differences were found between genotypes in both crops and between environments in plant cane for germination count , number of tillers, number of stalks, stalk height, stalk diameter, field Brix, sucrose content, tonne cane and tonne sugar per hectare. G x E interaction was high for all characters in both crops. The results suggest that breeding and selection strategies should aim at breeding and selection for specific environments. The expected genetic advances were high, especially for number of stalks, cane and sugar yields and indicated good potential for improvement by selection | |
