The agronomic performance and productivity of some promising varieties at the final stage of selection as well as some commercial varieties are reviewed. Among promising varieties, M1658/78 is the most interesting on account of its wide adaptation in different soils and climates and its high cane yield and high sucrose content. Other varieties reviewed comprise M298/71, M1236/71, M791/75, R568 and Q93. It has now been established that varieties such as M3035/66, R570 and M695/69 have a positive effect on productivity, their mean cane yield being in the order of 103 t/ha compared to 87 t/ha for older varieties like M93/48, M13/56 and M574/62. New recommendations concerning the planting and harvesting of commercial varieties are also given. | |
