The white grub, Hoplochelus marginalis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) was first discovered in Réunion island in 1981 and is an important sugarcane pest. This insect represents a threat to the sugar industry and agriculture in Mauritius in general. Precautionary measures aimed at minimizing the risk of entry of this pest into Mauritius are described. These include rescheduling of air flights from Réunion Island, to avoid the grand flight period of the insect, control of movement of ships, detection surveys in Mauritius and other strict quarantine measures. | |
