Starting in 1989 with botanical seeds of selected crosses provided by CIP, potato clones have been developed by MSIRI in Mauritius for lowland tropical conditions. The first clones will be released in early 1997. This paper compares their yields with that of the Dutch variety Spunta, in multi-locational trials on farmers' fields over three years. Their tuber morphological characteristics, cooking and processing quality and reaction to bacterial wilt, late blight and early blight are also presented. The clones have been sent to CIP-Nairobi for bulking and distribution to regional programmes. | |
