The incidence in Mauritius of the spottend stem borer Chilo sacchariphagus has been on the increase in the past years and severe damage leading to stalk death occurs occasionally. Planting season, lack of irrigation, and cane varieties seem to be the factors responsible for this increase. The effect of varying levels of borer damage was assessed in mature cane of the same age in four fields of cultivars M 3035/66, M 1176/77 and M 52/78. Results are in concordance with previous work in that the borer causes up to 12 per cent decrease in sucrose percent cane as the number of bored internodes per stalk exceeds 5. | |
