This review covers the performance of the thirteen sugar factories which operated in Mauritius durihng the 1999 season. Length of the season, cane quality, milling and boiling house performance, sugar production, sugar quality, and energy production are discussed. All data have been calculataed from figures supplied by the sugar factories. The 1999 crop was marked by the most severe drought ever faced by the country. Cane and sugar productions were the lowest ever reached since the record low production in 1960 (due to two intense cyclones), and factory performance was severely affected by the poor quality cane. new equipment installed during the season includes a platular heat exchanger, a continuous vacuum pan, vertical crystallizers and a wet scrubber for flue gas scrubbing. | |
