Trends in the mode of inheritance of common rust (Puccinia melanocephala H. and P. Syd.) in sugar cane were studied in seven bi-parental families and a selfed family. Very good concordance in the mean infection rate of both control and parent varieties with their established disease ratings was observed. The pattern of segregation within families showed that most distributions involving one resistant parent were highly to moderately skewed with higher percentages of progenies concentrated around the resistant classes, whereas a distribution involving susceptible and highly susceptible parents was skewed with higher percentages of progenies located in susceptible to highly susceptible classes. One cross between a susceptible and a resistant parent exhibited a bimodal distribution. The study showed that inheritance of rust is not simple and it appears that a few genes with major effects are involved and possibly some minor genes as well. They act in a more or less quantitative way. | |
