The accuracy and suitability of the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) for assessing the nutrient status of sugar cane under conditions in Mauritius were investigated using two sugar cane varieties (M13/56 and S17) in sils responsive to N fertilization. Results obtained indicate that DRIS makes essentially the same diagnosis as the threshold value concept. This implies that foliar diagnosis using threshold values in Mauritius do not suffer from drawbacks that would impair the accuracy of the diagnosis. Diagnosis of K status of sugar cane by DRIS is found to be influenced by the age of the sugar cane ratoon indicating that standardization of plant age at TVD leaf sampling will be just as important as in the threshold value concept. Though the DRIS represents a refinement over the threshold value concept and could in the future pave the way for a change in philosophy in the foliar diagnosis of the nutrient status of sugar cane in Mauritus, it is not yet able to supersede the use of threshold values because a relationship between DRIS indices and supplementary nutrient fertilization to correct a deficiency is not available. | |
