The use of herbicides to control weeds in mixed cropping situations is certainly better than hand-weeding. However, the products used must be selective to both crops. Before a chemical is released for use in sugar cane, it is tested in 4 different stages. Herbicides given for other crops are usually tested first in sugar cane and then in the food crop concerned. Apart from general weed control, certain herbicides are also evaluated against specific problem weeds and if they have a very long residual effect, their duration in the soil must be determined. | |
