The conversion of a crystallizer station to continuous operation usually involves modification of equipment levels to provide the necessary heads for flow. Present methods used to estimate the heads required, or to size the baffles, weirs, ducts and channelling for each crystallizer seem to have been based largely on intuition. It is the purpose of this paper to summarise relations which can be used to calculate head-flow characteristics for the flow of molasses and massecuites through ducts, channels and orifices and over weirs. These relations are summarised in Table I, and should prove useful not only to m ill engineers, but also to designers of continuous vacuum pans and crystallizers. | |
