The picture of fertilizer imports into Mauritius for the years 1900 to 1960 has been examined and it is concluded that the principal factor governing the level of these imports was the tonnage of sugar product. The shortcomings of fertilizer practices during this period were principally a wasteful use of potash and neglect of phosphate. The basic philosophies behind rational fertilization have been examined and the current fertilizer practice in Mauritius is discussed on this basis. | |
