A study was initiated to investigate the potential contribution of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) to sustainable sugarcane production in mauritius and as a means to reduce costs. Isolations on culture media from plant parts and soil samples were carried out to determine the occurrence of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The bacterial speciesfound were: Herbaspirillum rubrisubalbicans, Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus and Azospirillum spp. Herbaspirillum, the causal gent of mottled stripe disease of sugarcane, was alteady known to be present by the latter two are new records. H. rubrisubalbicans was the most widely distributed, and 18 isolates were collected from symptomatic and asymptomatic leaves as well as roots from fields of the humid and super-humid zones. Seven isolates of G. diazotrophicus were obtained from leaf sheaths, nodes, internodes, roots and trash of sugarcane from all agroclimatic zones. However, the bacterium was only found in fields that have not received any N application for several years. Fifteen isolates of Azospirillum spp. have been collected from roots and rhizosphere of sugarcane. Physical and biochemical charaterisation of bacteria showed that they were typical of the described species with some variability. An acetylene reduction assay was used to determine the bacterias' ability to fix nitrogen in vitro, and isolates of Herbaspirillum, Gluconacetobacter and Azospirillum were able to fix 2.1 to 3.8, 35.7 to 147.1 and 2.9 to 1580 nmoles of ethylene/vial/h respectively. There findings show that diazotrophic and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria are associated with some sugarcane varieties in Mauritius. | |
