The development of a scheme for seed potato production in Mauritius is outlined. After the necessary research and exploratory phase at the beginning of the decade, seed production was gradually increased and became a commercial enterprise. The constraints in this scheme are discussed and the steps taken all along to ensure its success are presented. Three streams of production have been undertaken, namely: (a) the single multiplication of A quality seeds of variety Up-to-date imported from South Africa; (b) the multiplication over two or more generations of newly selected varieties from foundation stocks imported from Europe; and (c) clonal selection to constitute new stocks of healthy seed. While the latter is still under experimentation, the first two streams have been developed on a fair scale. Up to some 850 tonnes of seeds in a year have been produced, the bulk of which is variety Up-to-date. The organization of production and certification has been streamlined. Seeds of good quality, certified from freedom from major seed-borne diseases on the basis of performance tests, are obtained locally. The objective is to produce about 50 per cent of the country's seed requirement. | |
