A number of annual and perennial weeds are effectively controlled by post-emergence sprays of Roundup at appropriate dosages. Because the chemical is also strongly phytotoxic to sugar cane, its application has been recommended in the absence or in pre-emergence of the crop. However, this is not effective. In short season plant cane which is planted too soon after ploughing out the previous crop for weeds to have emerged. Experimentation has shown that when sugar cane has reached an average height of at least 120 cm, Roundup can safely be applied to provide satisfactory weed control without causing any reduction in cane and sugar yield. | |
