Large amounts of bagasse are available in sugarcane growing countries. Owing to its high crude fibre content, it is a poor-quality roughage. An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of supplementary nitrogen on the digestion of bagasse in the sheep, when fed as urea, in the presence of a source of readily available carbohydrates. A ration comprising 200 g bagasse, 200 g. molasses and 70 g soyabean meal/day was fed to two sheep with and without a supplement of 10 g/day urea. The sheep were fitted with re-entrant duodenal cannulae, from which representative samples of duodenal digests were taken by means of an automatic device. The extent of digestion in the rumen of various dietary components was measured for each day of the collection periods. Urea supplementation led to a non-significant increase in the rumen digestion of dry matter and modified-acid-detergent (MAD) fibre. The energy disappearing in the rumen increased significantly. It is suggested that the high lignin content of bagasse could have limited fibre degradation, whilst an increased breakdown of pentosans could have made a significantly greater amount of energy available. There was a loss of N from the stomach from both diets. This was slight for diet A but greater for diet B. The addition of urea significantly increased the flow of ammonia-nitrogen to the duodenum, while non-ammonia nitrogen did not change much. It appeared that ammonia released in the rumen with diet B was not successfully utilised by the microflora, possibly because the supply of readily available energy was limiting. | |
