Velpar is a new herbicide which gives good pre- and post-emergence control of both graminaceous and broad-leaf weeds. In plant canes, Velpar was found to be highly phytotoxic, particularly under dry conditions, but when the amount of water received through rainfall and/or irrigation was adequate, the level of phytotoxicity was quite low. Ratoon canes proved to be tolerant as in only one occasion was cane yield reduced by the 2 kg a.i./ha rate of Velpar. Compared with Velpar used alone, a broader spectrum of weeds was controlled by mixtures of Velpar and diuron. The efficacy of Velpar was not enhanced by the addition of a non-ionic surfactant at 0.2 per cent. The mixture that has given optimum weed control whilst being safe to sugar cane is 0.5 kg a.i. of Velpar + 2 kg a.i. of diuron per hectare. | |
