The scientific work conducted in the Indian Ocean South of the Equator within the Tropic of Capricorn since the eighteenth century is reviewed. The natural features and resources of the small isolated islands are discussed, as are the impact of the agricultural explosion of the nineteenth century and the effect of the exploitation of phosphatic fertilizer on the nature biota.
