Phyllophaga smithi, Heteronychus licas and Alissonotum piceum are the main sugar cane white grubs in Mauritius. After having been a serious threat to the local sugar industry for over thirty years, P. smithi has declined considerably in importance. The real causes are still obscure, and a few possible reasons are discussed. The other two species cause little damage. In the context of measures taken to face the risk of a possible entry into Mauritius of Hoplochelus marginalis, a grub which is a cause for concern for cane planters in Reunion Island, in-depth studies have been initiated into various aspects of the biology and status of the main white grubs attacking sugar cane in Mauritius. These studies include surveys for larvae, trapping for adult beetles, status of natural enemies especially scoliid wasps, and the incidence relative to soil type and climatic zones. Data available to date are given and discussed. | |
