The effect of omitting or halving the recommended N rate (120 kgN/ha) in alternate years on sugar yields were studied in field trials laid down during 1979 and 1982 in the different agro-climatic regions of Mauritius. The results showed that due to the poor residual value of N, withholding N fertilization in alternate years would lead to significant yield losses in the ratoons not fertilized. The yields of ratoons where N supply was restored may also be detrimentally affected. The response of sugar cane to N fertilization varied from site to site. Application of just 60 KgN/ha yearly was at some sites sufficient to sustain the currently attainable yield levels. The site specificity of response to N fertilizer therefore provides scope for reducing the input of N fertilizer without impairing sugar cane yields. At the same time, the site specificity of response to N, stresses the need for elaboration of a test method that accurately reflects the soil N supplying capacity to sugar cane before any reduction in the recommended N rates can be contemplated. | |
