Mechanized harvesting of sugar cane has become unavoidable in Mauritius with the high cost and scarcity of labour. This paper reviews the factors related to mechanical harvesting since its reintroduction in 1989. In 1999, the fleet of harvesters comprised 18 chopper and 7 whole stalk harvesters and 6847 hectares were mechanically harvested. Research has been geared towards monitoring the effect of mechanical harvesting on yield, ratooning and soil bulk density, measurement of losses incurred during the harvesting process and monitoring the performance of harvesters under industrial conditions. Emphasis is put on the use of chopper-harvesters in green cane, an environment friendly process. | |
