Mauritius suffered its most severe drought in 1999. This has resulted in a 41 per cent reduction in sugar production, with the north and west being the most affected regions. The hybridization plots have been transferred to Pamplemousses because of the hot climate which favours a better pollination. In order to accelerate the selection procedure other amendments have been made. The three most promising varieties are M 1042/86, M 1186/86 and M 1397/86. Their cane and sugar yields are quite good, but their sucrose content is fairly low to average. The newly-released varieties for 1999 are: M 1394/86, M 1400/86 and R 579. Their sucrose content is low at the beginning but improving to the end of the crop. Their sugar production is good because of their high cane yield. | |
