Fatty acid profiles were prepared from 83 isolates of Xanthomonas campestris pv vasculorum (XCV) obtained from sugar cane and other hosts in Mauritius and on a series of isolates obtained from the National Collection of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria (NCPPB). Isolates were grown on trypticase soy broth agar and after extraction, the fatty acids were analysed by gas-liquid chromatography and a special computer program. The XCV isolates were grouped on their principal component analysis. Race 1 isolates of Mauritius from sugar cane and palm formed a separate cluster from race 2 isolates. Moreover, isolates from the host Thysanolaena maxima gave a different profile as well as those isolates of the NCPPB ones originating from South Africa, Puerto Rico and Australia. It is inferred that fatty acid profiles can be used for race differentiation in DCV and to identify strains from other hosts and from various geographical regions. This technique can be of use in epidemiological studies within a given country or region. | |
