Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV) is the causal agent of yellow leaf of sugar cane, a disease reported in most sugar cane producing countries including Mauritius. An island-wide survey was conducted in 2007 to determine the distribution of the virus in commercial cultivars in order to establish its status. Three thousand and twenty-one leaf samples of 22 commercial varieties were collected from 91 fields surveyed at random in 26 locations island-wide and covering the different agro-climatic zones. F1 leaves were tested by tissue blot immunoassay (TBIA) using a SCYLV polyclonal antibody developed locally. Severe symptoms of the disease were observed in varieties M 695/69, M 52/78, M 387/85, M 1186/86, M 1400/86, M 2024/88, M 703/89, M 2593/92, R 570, R 573 and R 575, but did not correlate closely with the presence of the virus. The survey revealed that SCYLV was largely distributed over the island and 58.8 per cent of samples were positive. While some cultivars such as R 579 were heavily infected (up to 100 per cent), others such as R 573 showed relatively low infection rates. Variety M 1176/77, was negative for the virus in all of the 275 samples tested. This variety is considered to be highly resistant to the prevailing strain of SCYLV in Mauritius. The occurrence of the aphid vector Melanaphis sacchari was low (0.11 per cent of fields) and did not correlate with the wide distribution of the virus, suggesting that spread of the disease in Mauritius is mainly due to infected seed cane. SCYLV was detected in single aphids by RT-PCR. | |
