Silage from cane tops was prepared on a commercial scale using ammonium sulphate and molasses at 1 and 5 per cent respectively as additives. The silage was compared to fresh fodder in a feeding trial carried out at two sites. The rest of the ration consisted of molasses with 3 per cent urea at 3 per cent livewirght, together with copra cake 1 kg, fish meal 200 g and rice bran 500 g. At one site daily gain was 671 g and 751 g and at the other 566 g and 580 g for silage and fresh fodder, respectively, the differences not being significant. The results suggested that the production and use of cane tops silage should be seriously envisaged in Mauritius. The economics of ensiling is discussed. | |
