Although the Mauritian economy has undergone major structural changes over the last twenty years, it still remains heavily dependent on agriculture. The future developments in agriculture must come through technology improvements and increased efficiency at all levels. Agricultural research institutions will have to take into account the structural changes of the economy and be receptive to new ideas. Libraries and information centres have a major role to play in the management of scientific and technical information and its transfer to support research activities in Mauritius. Extension Services communicate the results of research to the planting community within a structure that is largely dominated by the framework of ownership of the sugar industry. The research-extension linkage is reinforced through the medium of publications and the creation of databases for effective transfer of technical know-how to the Mauritian planter. | |
