Irrigating an inter-row cropping system particularly by the drip method offers a possible means of improving sugar yield with a concurrent increase in food crop production in the drier areas of Mauritius. In the present study, sole cane and cane intercropped with maize or groundnut were either rainfed or received full or half of their water requirements via driplines buried in between each pair of cane rows. It has been shown that maize re duces cane growth and yield and the effect is more pronounced under stress conditions. There are indications that cane can tolerate a certain amount of stress during the presence of the intercrop and recuperation is possible in the absence of water stress during the stalk elongation phase. | |
