Five virus diseases were identified in Mauritius: Maize streak, maize mosaic, maize stripe, maize line and maize dwarf mosaic virus. Maize streak, which is transmitted by Cicadulina mbila and also occurs on several Graminaceae is by far the most important, causing severe losses in some localities. Maize hybrids imported from Europe which are at present recommended for planting in cane interlines are very susceptible. Of the three Peregrinus transmitted viruses, maize mosaic virus, a bacilliform virus was isolated while the two others, maize stripe and maize line virus were identified by symptomatology and serology. Maize dwarf mosaic virus which is mechanically transmissible was also isolated. | |
