In field experiments in two locations and two seasons, highly significant correlations were obtained between leaf number, days to midsilk, plant height and maturity of maize hybrids from France and Holland. In the environments used, hybrids of different maturities differed markedly in leaf number, days to mid-silk and plant height. Days to silking and plant height varied with location and s eason, and it was concluded that t hey were inconsistent indicators of maturity. Leaf number appeared to be a stable character. It was affected only to a slight extent by environmental conditions. It was suggested that it could be used to ra te maturity of newly introduced hybrids. | |
