Symptoms on inoculated plants differed in various respects but the most striking feature which can be used to differentiate between the diseases is the apical bending associated with MStpV, which becomes apparent when plants are inoculated after a certain growth stage. In the hybrid UR22 the effects of MCStpV are more severe than those of MStpV when inoculation takes place at the coleoptile stage. These diseases are distinct symptomatologically from maize mosaic virus and all exist side by side in Mauritius and Reunion. Although there is some evidence that MCStpV and MStpV are strs. of the same virus there is still no demonstration of the association of a filamentous nucleoprotein 3 nm diam. with MStpV in Mauritius. | |
