Leaching losses of potassium (K) in freely drained soils under sugarcane were followed in field lysimeters over a 3-year period at 2 sites receiving 3 700 and 1 550 mm rainfall per year, respectively. As little K (less than 5 kg K/ha/y) was lost by leaching, split application of K fertilizers would be superfluous even in the high rainfall regions of Mauritius. However, fertilizer K application even at 140 kg K2O /ha significantly enhanced leaching of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) from soils. | |
